Backstory:

((TW: Parental Death, Multiple deaths))

   Born to Susanna Sinclair, single mother. The biological father walked out when he was told of the pregnancy.  Susanna's family disowned her for having a child out of wedlock. She took nursing classes at night while pregnant and continued after the birth of her son. She kept him and raised him as best she could. She would work the overnights at the hospital while Jae slept.

  Jae was a shy kid, not having many friends or any at all. He found something special with technology. Taking little toys or appliances apart and discovering how they worked. It led him to coding and building his own devices. His mother encouraged him to expand and learn more. He would take small jobs fixing phone or computer issues from his mother’s coworkers at the hospital to earn some extra money.

  By the time he graduated Highschool, he could have easily gotten several full scholarships to great colleges, but then he wouldn't have time for a job to help support his mother. He wanted her to have to work less hours and be able to support her the way she's always supported him. Save enough to move out of their apartment and move into a nice home in a better neighborhood.

   Susanna didn't want her son to waste his chance at a good education. Didn't want him to waste his life worrying about her. She was the one who suggested the marines. Jae could get the best education and use his gifts and also make some money after. Jae was terrified of leaving home but there were so many benefits and it did sound enticing. ..and after basic training he would have 10 days to come back to spend with her before going back.

   At the airport, Jae hugged his mother tightly. Susanna was so proud of her son. She waved him off, the two not knowing it would be the last time they saw each other.

  Despite Jae's pleas to his mom about working double shifts, Susana still did. She was hoping to save up to buy Jae a car as a gift for when he returned. Just after halfway though Jae’s basic training, Susanna was driving home after a double shift. She was exhausted and fell asleep behind the wheel. The car drove off the road and impacted a large tree. It was instant.

   It was the hospital staff that notified the Red Cross to notify Jae. The company officer was the one to tell him. Jae was crushed. He blamed himself for not being there. The recruit was allowed leave to return home and take care of arrangements. His mother’s staff members all pitched in their own time and donations to help him. It was a little ceremony. Her ashes were spread in her favorite place. A lake they would visit to fish every summer.

   Jae donated her clothes and the apartment goods to her church’s goodwill donations. He boxed up a few things for storage that he would collect after training, and cancelled the lease. He wasn't planning on coming back.

  Returning from leave, he was set back about two weeks, but now more invested than ever. Despite his size and strength, he persevered and showed he was worthy to be there, proving others wrong.

  Now a private, he was put in a squad. The others were all higher ranked: A Lance corporal, two Sergeants and a Captain. Of course there was the hazing period. Often being called shorty, short stack, kid, emo, and tech geek. Almost anything but his name or Callsign. Glitch took it in stride. He's been called worse before. Over time and missions they were bonding. They became Glitch’s brothers, the Captain a father figure. He finally has a family to call his own. Glitch wanted to become a tech specialist, but first needed to reach the rank of Lance Corporal.

  When he reached Private First Class, the team celebrated. On his 21st birthday they celebrated and took him out. Got him pretty drunk and Glitch said he would never drink again. Glitch would play little pranks on the guys as well, locking their phones, changing their passcode, looking at their search history. All in good fun though. Normal brother stuff.

   Glitch liked listening to the older officers tell stories of their missions. He especially tuned in when they spoke of the former Bravo company. The legendary Mäher. At least Glitch thought he was legendary.. He even hacked the classified records to read old debriefs and Bravo’s final mission.

   His Captain called them all in for the briefing of the next mission. New intel had arrived concerning Bravo’s final mission. Now they were sent in to ‘redo’ the mission, discovering the same man responsible is using the location once again. They geared up and deployed. This time around, the mission was successful. The culprit wouldn't escape this time or any other time. He took a bullet for each member of Bravo team before the final shot to the head.

   After the debrief, Glitch went digging and after a few days found a working number that belonged to the Lieutenant of Bravo Team. The only one left alive. He deserved to know. Hoping it could bring a little closure to the former soldier.

  Their next mission was to an area not too far from the previous location. More intel came in from a source  saying some of his men were trying to recover goods and supplies left behind including a phone with contacts and messages that could lead to more stashes and plans. The team deployed, expecting this to be rather quick in and out mission. Upon their arrival back home, Glitch was going to be moving up in rank to Lance Corporal.

    The intel led to a warehouse. The supposed phone was stashed in a secret compartment of a desk by the south side. The warehouse was fully dark, no lights, no movement. Glitch sent out a uv drone just to make sure. It was clear. The team moved in. All inside the warehouse. Still, something didn't feel right to Glitch. Working with enough tech, he knew when he was being watched.

    He kept telling his team they needed to go. The Sergeants told him to relax, the lance corporal said he’ll get him a monster for the way back. The Captain though, he knew better. He learned to trust Glitch’s instincts when it came to surveillance. If the kid said they were being watched, they were. He was about to make the call to fall back when the Lance corporal found the phone in the desk, just as the intel said. When he turned it on, a bright white screen then a Lock Screen. An eta. A timer.

…12…11…10…

 Shit!  The Lance corporal smashed the phone on the ground. Glitch snuck up to a window and looked outside. There was something in the sky moving toward them quickly.

….9…8…7….

  There was no time to run. They wouldn't escape the blast. There was no time to try figure a way out. The lance corporal grabbed the deployable cover. The Captain shoved Glitch under a staircase and covered him with his own body.

…6…5…4….

   The sound of the missile was growing louder. The Sergeants and Lance corporal join the Captain and covered them with the shield as much as possible.

The ground began to shake. A Captain’s final apology. A squad’s final words. A Private first class’s emotional good bye to his brothers and father.

…3…2….1…

    A bright light and it was over.

               ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    A jolt. Another jolt. A third and then on the fourth. Brown eyes shot open. Bright lights, People all around yelling and hovering over him. He couldn't hear any of it. Only a loud ringing. Pain. So much pain. He couldn't move. Everything was burning. He tried to scream but no sound. The smell of blood, burning skin, and the sterile smell of a hospital. He was moving, being pushed through halls and into a bright room. Then a mask being put over his face. The air filling his lungs putting him to sleep. The brown eyes rolled back and the world went dark once more.
    When he awoke next, there was a woman in scrubs changing the iv in his arm. Two officers standing outside his door. Seeing the young soldier awake the nurse called for a doctor. Glitch taking in the surrounding. He was in a hospital. It was evening? Maybe sunrise? Hard to tell. When the doctor arrived the first thing the soldier asked for was his squad.
   A General, Lieutenant General and hospital Chaplin gave the soldier the news. It destroyed the soldier. Why him? Why did he survive? Why he did survive over his Captain or his fellow squad members? The following days were even rougher. After evaluations, it was determined that Glitch was unfit for active duty. He was to be honorably discharged. But what now for the broken soldier? He had no home, no family, no job. This was all he had. Where could he go? What would he do?
